Carnival is built on stories — passed down, danced out, and carried on through generations.

For our 25th year participating in the Rotterdam Zomercarnaval, Triniconnection returns to the very beginning, to a character that helped spark it all: the Fancy Sailor.

 

Long before Rotterdam. Long before Triniconnection. There was a young boy in Trinidad, playing Sailor mas in the streets. The Fancy Sailor is one of Carnival’s most iconic traditional characters — proud, playful, full of rhythm and attitude. With sharp movements, bold posture, and unmistakable flair, the Sailor commands the road, telling stories through every step.

This was the character our founder, Deems Warner, grew up portraying. A role that shaped his love for Carnival, culture, and mas.

In 2026, as Triniconnection celebrates 25 years on the streets of Rotterdam, we honor that origin story. Fancy Sailor is a tribute to Deems Warner — the Original Sailor — and to the journey that followed. From Trinidad to the Netherlands. From childhood memories to a community that has grown, danced, and celebrated together for a quarter of a century. Our Fancy Sailor is tradition reimagined.

Classic nautical elements meet modern carnival design. Clean whites and soft metallics reflect our silver anniversary, while vibrant fuchsia accents and feathers bring the energy, movement, and drama of the road. Ocean-inspired tones flow through the costumes, echoing freedom, rhythm, and motion. Every detail tells a story. Every step carries legacy.Carnival is more than costumes.
